The Lore: The Keeper's Kindness

He lives on the edge of the magical grounds, in a cozy hut that smells of woodsmoke, loyal beasts, and overwhelming kindness. He's not known for his baking prowess—his rock cakes are a menace to teeth—but for one lonely boy's eleventh birthday, he made an exception.

He'd carried it all the way to a windswept hut in the middle of the sea, this big, sticky, slightly-squashed box. Inside was a dense, sweet, strawberry-and-vanilla creation, made with more love than skill. The pink frosting, made with some kind of jam, was a bit lumpy.

It is, perhaps, a bit squashed from being sat on, but it doesn't matter. It's the scent of a new beginning, of finding out you're special, of finally, finally being cared for. It is the greatest cake you have ever known.
